What To Expect From Your Reflexology Appointment

foot massage
So, you’ve made your first reflexology appointment! This is great news, and a wonderful step toward improved health and wellness. You’re probably curious about what to expect, what it will feel like, and what you should expect to feel afterward. A professional Reflexologist will understand your concerns and take steps right away to put you at ease.

Your First Visit
Before your practitioner begins treatment, they will conduct a thorough consultation about your health history, current ailments and injuries, as well as what you hope to get out of your sessions. It is natural for you to have questions, and this is the time to get those answered. Your Reflexologist wants you to feel comfortable and relaxed going into the session, and they are used to answering lots of questions. They will explain how reflexology works, and how it may be able to help with any of the conditions revealed during your consultation.

Your First Treatment
Unlike with regular massage, reflexology appointments are done with the client fully clothed, with the exception of shoes and socks. It’s a good idea to wear loose, comfortable clothing so you can be fully relaxed during your treatment. Your Reflexologist will work on your feet, as well as possibly your hands and ears, as they address various internal organs, glands, bones, muscles, and nerves through the specific corresponding points on your extremities. The practitioner may apply a small bit of cream or powder to allow them to better work the reflex points on your hands and feet.

What Does Reflexology Feel Like?
While you will feel some pressure during your reflexology appointment, it should feel firm and not painful. This therapy may at first feel like a glorious foot massage, but it goes much deeper than that. As the therapist manipulates the various pressure points on your feet, hands, or ears, you may feel a release or sense of tingling, warmth, or energy in the targeted areas. Other completely normal reactions include perspiration of the hands or feet, thirst, sleepiness, relaxation, or a slight light-headed feeling. It’s ok if you fall asleep on the table, as you will still get the benefits of your appointment.

After Your Reflexology Session
After your session, you can expect to feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Your feet will feel fantastic, and you may start to notice increased energy or relief from pain. Over the next few days, you may also experience more frequent bowel movements as your body eliminates the toxins released during your session, as well as minor skin irritations. Your joints may feel more mobile, and you may find that you are sleeping better and more soundly. Since the benefits of reflexology are cumulative, you will want to talk with your therapist about scheduling your next appointment.
