Lymphatic Drainage
We all know the importance of blood flow throughout our bodies to keep us healthy, moving individuals. But what about the lymphatic system, and how does that contribute to blood flow?
Lymphatic System: A Brief Explanation
As blood pumps through your body, oxygen and nutrients are brought to cells and passed through capillaries, allowing blood plasma to flow out to surrounding tissue. The blood plasma, which goes through many different capillary walls and surrounding tissues, exchanges nutrients, oxygen, and metabolic waste products. The lymphatic system refers to the plasma that helps remove toxins, waste, and other proteins from your bodily tissues. This plasma, known as “lymph” because of the large amount of proteins, needs to be removed from your body to prevent swelling. Too much swelling may be a result of lymphedema.
Lymphedema
Lymphedema is an abnormal amount of collected lymph fluid throughout your body. This can happen from a variety of conditions and circumstances, including surgery, radiation, or arthritis. When fluid collects and an excess amount of protein is present, you may experience intense swelling throughout your body, first starting as soft swelling. However, if you do not treat your lymphedema soon, this soft swelling can harden and become irreversible.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage
It’s important to begin a decongestive lymphatic therapy (DLT) program to remove this excess liquid and treat your lymphedema. Though this could include bandaging, exercise, and skincare treatments, many doctors recommend a lymphatic drainage massage. In addition to relaxing your muscles, this type of massage uses specific massage techniques to unclog your lymph nodes so they can process the extra protein out of your lymphatic system. This, in turn, reduces your swelling and improves overall circulation throughout the lymphatic system. Lymphatic drainage massages are typically performed by chiropractors or therapeutic massage specialists to your upper or lower body. Whether you’re currently experiencing symptoms of lymphedema or not, you may benefit from a lymphatic drainage massage if you experience:
Skin Disorders
Insomnia and/or Fatigue
Anxiety and/or Depression
Digestive Issues
Arthritis
Migraines
Fibromyalgia
If you experience heart failure, blood clots, infections, or kidney issues, it is recommended that you do NOT get a lymphatic drainage massage. As always, discuss any concerns with your doctor before starting a treatment plan.
