Reflexology: Ancient, Natural Healing Art
Most people don’t know too much about the ancient massage technique, reflexology. Reflexology is deeply rooted in Chinese medicine, stemming from the word “qi,” or “vital energy.” In Chinese beliefs, qi flows throughout everyone but is blocked by the body when a person is feeling too much stress, resulting in illness. Reflexology corrects this imbalance, keeping flow throughout your body so you can stay healthy and disease-free!
But what is reflexology, and what does that mean for your next massage? Let’s review some of the most commonly asked questions about reflexology so you can decide whether or not to try it!
How does reflexology work?
Different amounts of pressure are applied to your feet, hands, and ears during a reflexology massage. The theory behind reflexology is that these body parts are deeply connected to your organs and other systems throughout your body. Often, masseuses will use a foot chart to help guide them as they apply pressure to different parts of your feet.
What are the benefits of reflexology?
It’s hard to pinpoint the exact benefits of reflexology due to a lack of studies. However, limited studies and people who regularly use reflexology have reported that it has helped them:
Decrease pain
Improve their mood
Boost immune system and get over colds and sinus infections
Fight cancer
Improve hormonal imbalances and fertility
Ease arthritis pain and back issues
Improve indigestion
Can reflexology help with stress or anxiety?
In addition to the physical benefits, reflexology can also help lower stress and anxiety levels. In two different studies from 2000 and 2014, patients recovering from different health conditions (breast or lung cancer and heart surgery patients, respectively) who received a 20-30 minute reflexology foot massage reported lower stress and anxiety levels than patients who did not receive a reflexology massage.
Is reflexology safe to try?
Absolutely! Since reflexology is comfortable and non-invasive, it is generally considered very safe, even if you have serious health conditions. You should always discuss with your doctor before you try reflexology, particularly if you have blood clots, gout, foot ulcers, circulatory issues (especially in your feet), thyroid issues, or epilepsy. You’ll likely still be able to try reflexology even if you have these conditions; you may just need to take a few extra precautions.
